Panama beats USA 2-1, keeps tournament hopes alive

Panama caused the first major upset of the 2024 Copa America by defeating host United States 2-1 at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium this Thursday.

With this result, Panama earned their first three points, adding excitement to Group C.

A Match Marked by Intensity

The match, part of the second round of Group C, was filled with intensity and drama. American Timothy Weah was sent off in the 18th minute for punching Roderick Miller without the ball in play.

Despite being reduced to ten men, the USA took the lead in the 22nd minute with a powerful shot from Folarin Balogun, his second goal of the tournament.

Panama’s Response and Victory

Panama quickly responded and equalized four minutes later with a goal from César Blackman.

From the edge of the box, Blackman regained possession and, with a powerful low shot, beat U.S. goalkeeper Matt Turner, sending the ball into the net between the post and the keeper’s glove.

Looking Ahead

Panama’s Adalberto Carrasquilla was also red-carded for an incident involving Christian Pulisic, reducing both teams to ten players.

With this win, Panama keeps their tournament hopes alive and will face Bolivia in the group’s final match on July 1st. Meanwhile, the United States will conclude their group stage against Uruguay on the same day.
